Most startups and enterpreneurs think that building a successful startup means going into a cave, executing on a vision and finally bringing it to customers like Steve Jobs.
Unfortunately, real life doesn't work like that. Start ups (at least internet and software start ups) are all about learning and iterating to a successful outcome.
Of course the leading proponent of this are Eric Ries and Steve Blank . The theories are rolled up as Customer Development Process or Lean Startups.
A key concept of a lean startup is a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) which essentially means don't waste your time building a fully functional product without taking customer feedback very very early.
Sometimes a MVP, can even be just a bunch of slides. The customer can call it Vaporware but from the enterpreneurs perspective this is a great way to get feedback and early commitments.
A great example of the practice of MVP can be seen by a startup who published thier thoughts at on the Lean Startup Google Groups. Really encourage you to read it.
